Oh my God you guys seriously I am freezing right now.

I just walked from my school to my house. In the snow. It took me two hours—I left school a little after 6 and got back a little after 8. I hate snow. For a city that gets so much precipitation, Portland is remarkably underequipped for snow. My dad left work at 6:00 and is still a couple of miles away from home; his estimate is that he'll be here in about half an hour.

However, this day is made better by finals grades being up:

Race in Contemporary Society: A-
College Writing: A-
Intermediate Japanese I: B
Human Nature: A

This makes my academic standing "Good" and raises my GPA to 3.60. I am fucking stoked. I called my parents about it and they were excited too. This is the best GPA I've had since... ever. (:

Now I need to go take a fucking scalding shower.

e_r_i asked for pictures of my jewelry, and I was kind of looking for an excuse to make a "look at me I'm such a whore for pretty things" post, so... yeah.

So, pictures in order from smallest to biggest!

8g. Red acrylic, no flare, black o-rings. I don't remember where I got these... eBay, I think. These were the second pair of plugs I bought after stretching up to 10g.

6g. Rainbow dichro barbs, glass. Also from eBay, can't remember the name of the store. These are my favorites, I think, even though I can't wear them at present (being one size too large).

6g. Faux-amber acrylic, double-flare. Bought these from eBay, but the flare was a little too dramatic to fit through my ears, so I'm selling them on gaugetrade. For like $5. That's about all they're worth, sob.

6g. Opalite, single-flare. These are my second-favorites—they're gorgeous. I love opalite color, it's so subtle and nice ;; I bought these from Avanti in the Washington Square Mall.

6g. Horn w/bone inlay, double-fare. Bought these at Avanti at the same time as the opalite ones; I had been wearing the rainbow dichro barbs for like two and a half weeks at this point and really, really needed something organic and not-hangy.

4g. Black acrylic, abalone inlay. I bought these off of gaugetrade, from designergirl60. They came with another pair, a pair of 4g horn w/bone lotus inlay plugs, but I'm wearing them right now and didn't want to take them out to photograph, so those'll come in later.

4g. Clear acrylic, gear inset. I got these from lynnyanne for Christmas! They're super cute. I haven't tried to put them in yet (and the flare seems a little dramatic for my ears), but I'm going to probably run my 2g taper through my ear and then put the plugs in in a bit.

4g. Horn spirals w/bone spot inlays. These came from Avanti as well—I bought them around Thanksgiving time, and my mom put them in my stocking for Christmas. I love them so much ;;

2g. Green glass tunnels, single-flare, clear o-rings. Got these with lewdness from the Body Jewelry Store in Lloyd Center Mall. I'm not sure what the make on these is, but they're what I intend to put in when I size up to 2g.

00g. Ocean blue glass, single-flare, black o-rings. Ditto above for location purchased, but I suspect these are actually Gorilla Glass single-flare plugs. The color and style matches pretty well.

And finally..

6g, 2g and 00g tapers, respectively. Surgical steel, black o-rings. Got these from the Body Jewelry Store too, for half off when I bought a pair of plugs. :D

I have a question for those of you on my friendslist who are into bodymods—namely you two, hollzilla and mrfxxker, since I have gaugetrade and stretched in common with both of you.

The question is re: photographing, and I realize this is sort of a nitpicky thing, but, sob. I know that gaugetrade at least is way big on accurate documentation of plugs and suchlike, in that it's way poor form to show pictures that are not at all representative of what the jewelry really looks like. I have a really nice camera (Nikon D60, it's my baby), but it has a polarizing filter on it, which can occasionally change the intensity of colors... should I be taking the polarizer off my lens before I take pictures (namely selling pictures) of my jewelry?

Oh yeah, I just got the 4g horn-with-bone-inlay plugs in! They were double-flare so I was a little concerned, but they went in with only minor ouch. First order of business: I watched "The Hangover" with my dad just now. It was... actually really funny? I'm not usually the type who enjoys stupid humor, but this was pretty good. xD;;; My mom definitely wouldn't have liked it, though, so I'm glad she didn't watch it with us.

Second order of business: I'm importing Despa's new album into my iTunes right now. I don't think that anything could ever possibly match my love for MIRROR, but I have high hopes for Redeemer as well.

Third order of business: I'm really excited because now I can actually wear the 4g jewelry that I own :D

Yes, I do own three packages of Surgilube ;;;; The guy at the Body Jewelry Store gave them to me for free because... he's awesome. He also gave me 10% off on all of the plugs I bought, even though the taper price was already 50% off if I bought plugs with them. Mm I'll definitely be going back there!

I really love Christmas. My family's not religious, at all, but I really enjoy the way that Christmas gives us all a chance to be together and eat food and open presents and be generous. Obviously we don't celebrate the religious part of Christmas (no mass or anything), but it's still nice to have family time.

For the most part, what I got was clothes and books, which is awesome—since most of what I needed was clothes and books. xD;; I got some new pants and shirts, and a jacket which I definitely needed (all I had was one long fancy coat and some hoodies), and four books: Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, Tim Harford's The Undercover Economist (which I suspect might be an attempt on my dad's part to get me into economics, rofl), Patricia Cornwell's The Scarpetta Factor, and Garth Nix's Abhorsen trilogy compilation. I also got a blu-ray of "Across the Universe", which is a little silly since I don't have a blu-ray player at school, so I have to leave it here. xD;

The one thing I got that I'm extremely excited about is an Intuos 4 tablet! Drawing, for me, is kind of one of those things that... I'm okay at, and can be good at if I try really hard, but I don't practice nearly as much as I should. I hope that having a tool for drawing directly onto the computer will help me overcome that practice issue I have. It's beautiful *__*

Oh, and in my stocking I got D'espairsRay's new CD, a gift card, some Hi-Chew, and the pair of 4g spotted horn spirals that my mom bought for me while we were shopping over Thanksgiving break. I put them in almost immediately (well, I cleaned my ears first), and my bitch ear hurts a little but the other one is totally fine. I'm so excited, they're so pretty :Db

Now I can actually start wearing the 4g jewelry that I have!

Oh, and I'm planning on stretching my other ear piercings up to 6g as well. Molly is giving back the 10g tapers that I loaned to her, so I'll be stretching up to 10g and then to 6g from there (with the surgical steel tapers that I got from the Body Jewelry Store).

Like I said, I love Christmas. So Merry Christmas if you celebrate it, happy Friday if you don't, and I hope everyone has a good weekend. (:

Two things of note happened to me today!

So I picked up Chii, and we were driving to Bridgeport Shopping Center when the police car behind me turns on its lights! No siren, just lights. I kind of made a face like o__o; and pulled over.

This is, of course, my first time being pulled over by the police. And, uh, I have no idea what to do rofl. So I roll down my window and get out my wallet, and the policewoman comes over and asks to see license and registration.

Thoughts: WTF GRANDMA ORGANIZE YOUR GLOVE COMPARTMENT! It took me and Chii like a minute of digging around the papers to find the most recent registration, which, as it turns out, expired June 23, 2009.

That's right. I got pulled over by the LOPD because my grandma didn't renew her tags.

Fortunately I got off with just a warning, but my dad now has to go and get the tags renewed within the next week or so, otherwise my grandma's style will be seriously cramped. Not that she drives that much anyway, but still. Sob. At least I didn't get a ticket, I hear those things are pricey.

After our debacle with the LOPD, Chii and I went to Bridgeport and ate and shopped and blah blah blah. Skipping to the important part: We also went to Lloyd Center, where they apparently have a new store called, creatively, the Body Jewelry Store.

I can see you rolling your eyes, QC.

So we go in, and when we come out, I am carrying tapers in 6ga, 2ga, and 00ga, as well as plugs in 2ga and 00ga. The tapers are all three surgical steel, but the two sets of plugs are glass. The 2ga ones are green tunnels, and the 00ga ones are this gorgeous blue color—I'll take a picture and post it soon. Mmm, they're lovely ~~and expensive oh shit~~.

Residential schools (started in "the early 1800s" and 1879 for Canada and the United States respectively) were federally-funded "forced assimilation" programs for young native children, designed to make them into model Englishmen. Attendance was compulsory, and parents who refused to send their children to the schools were cut off from federal support, coerced, beaten, and imprisoned until they capitulated.

Because the general attitude toward native peoples in North America at the time was that they were savages who needed to have the wildness beaten out of them, the things that were permitted to be done to those children were horrific—they were chained to beds, whipped, beaten, locked up... One man (Warner Scott, who was age 54 in 1999—that was a paraphrased source in my paper and not a directly cited one, so I apologize, but I can't provide you with a specific name or title for that information) told an interviewer about watching a young boy be forced to eat his own vomit after he threw up into his bowl of porridge.

But arguably the most long-lasting effect of the residential school system was the sexual abuse that took place in an incredibly widespread way throughout the country. It's uncertain how many residential school students were victimized in the period of time that the schools were active, both because many of the students are now deceased and because of the inherent shame of talking about sexual abuse, but for just one example: In 1987, the RCMP completed an investigation of sexual misconduct at St. George's School, near Lytton, BC, that resulted in the charging of former dormitory supervisor Derek Clarke with nineteen sexual offenses. Three months later, he pleaded guilty to eleven counts of buggery and six counts of indecent assault. The crimes involved seventeen boys, some of whom had been as young as nine when they were victimized, and most had been students at St. George's School.

If Clarke is any indication (and he is not alone—others include William Douglas, a Salvation Army captain in Canyon City, BC, who was charged with twelve counts of gross indecency involving seven Nishga Indian boys, and Harold McIntee, a Roman Catholic priest, who in 1989 was charged with the sexual assault of thirteen Indian boys at a residential school near Williams Lake, BC), the sexual abuse of native children was not an isolated or uncommon phenomenon.

To summarize so far: Residential schools were an (in my mind, anyway) incontrovertibly racist institution established by the American and Canadian governments as a way to force the assimilation of native children into Anglo society. The students were frequently treated horribly, including but not limited to beatings, whippings, imprisonment and sexual abuse.

I suppose that a question to ask at this point would be whether or not Clarke, Douglas, McIntee, and others like them would have committed the same crimes if it had been Anglo-European children who attended the schools. Maybe, maybe not—we'll never be able to ask them. But personally, I find it difficult to believe that the fact that the children were first nations had nothing to do with the assaults. I find it even more difficult to believe when considering things like the 1996 report published by the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, detailing the various ways that Canadian first nations peoples had been abused of their rights. The report told, among other things, of a 1919 event in which a runaway student was shackled to a bed and beaten with a horse whip until he bled; the man accused of the beating, P.H. Gentlemen, freely admitted to having used the whip and shackles. The general secretary of the Missionary Society at the time mounted the defense that such beatings were the norm, "more or less, in every boarding school in the country", and Gentlemen remained at the school.

I bought two pairs of new plugs today! A pair of horn plugs with a bone swirl inlay, and a pair of opalite single-flare plugs that are gorgeous. Like, seriously ahhh I'm so excited about them. I'm wearing the horn ones for a while right now though, to make my ears happy after wearing glass barbs for so long.

Also, I love being home.

edit: Updated my list of jewelry that I now own. Damn, I own a lot of jewelry. zapthatmonster, call me or text me or something if you want to work out what the deal is with the tapers and 10g plugs.
